The first panel depicts the hand of God creating the universe, the sun, moon and stars (Genesis 1). As Christians, we believe creation not only happened a long time ago ‘in the beginning’ but God is still creating-still giving and sustaining life-in every present moment. Martin Luther put it this way: “I believe that God has created me and all that exist. He has given and still preserves my body and soul and all their abilities. He provides me with food and clothing, home and relationships, and everything I need from day to day. God also protects me in times of danger and guards ‘me from all evil. All this He does out of loving and divine goodness and mercy, though I do not deserve it. Therefore, I surely ought to thank and praise, serve and obey Him. This is most certainly true.” (Small Catechism, explanation to the first article of the Creed).
